Internet Violations and Abuse

As a service to our customers, Global Internet Services, Inc. informs you of security issues that may pose a problem. As you've discovered, using the Internet can be a very rewarding experience. While the public nature of the 'Net connects us to worthwhile information and a global community, it also opens the door to some negative activity. Fortunately, you can protect yourself from much of this activity if you take the proper precautions. The first step is being aware of potential harm.

SPAM mail is one of the most prevalent forms of abuse on the Internet today. Sending unsolicited email to multiple recipients takes up bandwidth and wastes space on users computers. Although there is not much we can do to stop SPAM, we can guard against it and do the best to configure our networks against allowing SPAM to pass through our servers.

As part of this program we no longer allow hosted sites to use the installed mail server to send email through to the Internet without authentication. SMTP or outgoing mail can only be sent once the user has logged into their POP3 mail account and becomes authenticated. This authentication lasts for 15 minutes, during which time the user is enabled to send mail. We've chose this option due to the risk of outside users abusing our network to send SPAM email.

If you've received unwanted email, here are a few of the things that you can do to actually see where spam is coming from, and remove it:
